Regarding to monument protection in Slovakia, the period of World War II has yet to receive the attention it deserves. For this reason and others, the activities of the Hungarian Monument Commission in the southern regions of the country are virtually unknown and undocumented. Drawing upon contemporary literature and archival materials, this text outlines possibilities for researching this topic. At the same time, it presents the case study of the restoration of the Romanesque church in Diakovce between 1939 and 1941, presented at the time as an example of ideal cooperation between heritage institutions, representatives of modern Hungarian sacred art, and the patron, the head of the Hungarian Catholic Church.
